Behold. South Park changing the derogatory definition of ‘fag.’ Making it synonymous with moron, jackass and douchebag.

You know there is a problem when South Park does a better job in realizing the mutability of language than most adults.

Louis CK said the same on one of this stand up specials. He always used fag as a kid and never used it in a gay connetation at all. As SP saod above, he used it when people were just being ‘faggy’. Just acting like an annoying jerk.

So a funny thing happened. I saw an Abrams Star Trek film, and I loved it!

I still feel that the first film he did is a little too “Oh look, we’re being new and different” but this film really settles into being Star Trek. This finally felt like Star Trek to me. They just get right on with being the crew, being in this new universe and don’t make a point of changes or new things. It just is.

I won’t spoil at all here, that’s for under the cut. What I will say is on the whole, the plot is good. It has a few missteps that I’ll detail in spoilers, but overall it’s good. The cast are great. Karl Urban is still the best and still just channels Kelly. Quinto is better as Spock this time for me, much less emotion and much more logic. Pine is good as Kirk, but still lacks a little something for me. Everyone gets to do more this time as well. Except Anton Yelchin who, despite a slight change, is left out a little. Cho as Sulu is much better. Last time he was purely based on one scene from one episode (that wasn’t even in character) but this time he’s more fleshed out and has a few nods to his eventual fate in the prime universe (I foresee a ship called Excelsior out there waiting for him).

There’s a tonne of references for us geeks out there. The last film irked my Trek geekyness but this one kept it happy. One bit with model ships even made me tear up. Model. Ships. I am such a loser. But it finally confirmed something I’ve wanted to know for a while.

My problems come in the last 10/15 minutes. The film decides to go in a direction that they obviously thought would be a good call-back, but for me it’s very misjudged and badly written. It steals lines from old Trek, which is to be expected, but the new lines are HORRIBLE. Just the worst sort of dialogue for that sort of scene. It’s an unfortunate mar on what had been a brilliant film up to then. And it’s linked to a very poor plot device that comes from a character being someone that, apart from said poor plot device, they didn’t need to be. A character is crow-bared in pretty much for a bad plot device. Not that the character is played badly, just it seems they just put them in for the sake of it.

So I really liked it, but it took a bit of a shit jump at the end. But it didn’t ruin my enjoyment as a whole. 4/5 stars!

And so onto spoilers:

§ Cumberbatch being Khan is the character above I felt was shoe-horned in. He was great, just had no need to be Khan apart from the shitty ‘magic blood’ plot device.

§ Kirk’s death a’la TWOK engineering scene was PANTS. The dialogue (when not taken from TWOK itself) was shockingly bad. There was no emotion for me at all, both because of how bad the scene was and because they’d hinted at the blood thing. So immediately you think ‘oh he’ll just be back in a bit’. Just…such a horrible scene. Luckily it’s the only one that was that bad.

§ Khan’s ‘magic blood’ brings Kirk back to life. And that sucks. It just does.

§ Was great to see the Klingons. I like their slight redesign. Not keen on the eyes though, too reptilian. And their ship design sucked. But hearing Klingon spoken again was ace.

§ Model ships made me tear up. There’s a camera pan across models ships of famous craft. One is the Phoenix warp ship from First Contact and one is the NX-01 Enterprise from ‘Enterprise’. Meaning that we finally know that everything before the Kelvin incident is the same. Enterprise as a series still happened. First Contact still happened pretty much the same way. Wonderful :)

§ Seatbelts! I did wonder if they stole that from the deleted scene from Nemesis though. The seatbelts even deployed in a similar way.

§ Engineering has a warp core now! FINALLY. I hated the use of the brewing factory last time, and even though it was still featured, we got a proper room for engineering. A core and consoles. Like proper Trek!

§ No brand names! Nokia can fuck off; there was none of that in this film. Again, lending to it feeling like Trek.

§ Building up Kirk and Carol Marcus’ relationship was good. I can see him wanting her in the future. Maybe a son called David will still happen? It’s odd seeing her as part of the crew at the end though; Dr Marcus was always outside of Starfleet.

§ The USS Vengeance looked badass. And that battle scene was pretty cool. The Enterprise took a beating! I do like that they went a bit more naval and the ships now have torpedo launchers down their sides like old ships with broadsides of cannons. A nice change there.
